Call for Research Proposals:

FSRI Student Research Awards RFP 2-2002

The Family Studies Research Initiative & Applied Cognition Research Institute, Department of Psychology at Boise State University, are placing a call for proposals (FSRI Student Research Awards RFP 2-2002) to help enhance student research.  Approximately, $4,000 in research funds will be made available to assist in the development of student research with the short-term goal of presenting research at regional and national conferences and the longer-term goal (but not too long J) of publishing in peer review journals in one’s area of specialty or interest.  It is expected that students will be collaborating with faculty on the presentations and publications.  Students are not required to be first authors, but should be heavily involved in the conceptual development, research implementation, and writing.

Background:

An important aspect of students’ educations is professional development in conducting high quality research in their area of specialty or interest.  Such activities help student prepare for entry into their fields (e.g., graduate programs), but also provide skills that can be generalized to other areas.  Many students are involved in the day-to-day aspects of the research activities, but cannot afford to travel to present the research at regional or national conferences with their faculty mentors.  The ability of being acculturated into one’s field of study, meeting and discussing one’s research with faculty and students from other institutions at professional conferences, and utilizing the feedback/contacts to help with peer review publications cannot be underscored as a highly unique learning opportunity. The focus of this research program is to provide funds to assist students with travel for presentation purposes or publication costs to help enhance student research.

Proposal Specifics:

Initial FSRI Student Research Awards RFP 2-2002 proposals should be short in length (about 2 pages) outlining research goals, several cited references from major works in the research area, time line for research activity, budget, and potential outlets (regional or national conferences where the work will be presented and peer review journals where research is likely to be submitted).  Please include the title FSRI Student Research Awards RFP 2-2002 on the front cover.  In addition, the proposal should include a one-page letter of support from the faculty mentor.  The faculty letter of support should not be generic, but rather the faculty member’s honest appraisal regarding potential for publication, the level/quality of the journal, and the impact of the paper on the field.  Unlike existing funding mechanisms at BSU, the goal of the FSRI Student Research Awards RFP 2-2002 is to help to assist in the development of students presenting research at regional and national conferences and publishing in peer review journals in one’s area of specialty or interest.  As such, Student Research Awards RFP 2-2002 proposals should be developed with the specific goal of being competitive in these professional domains.

Review Process:

Proposals will be reviewed by the Director of the FSRI/ACRI and a small research team.  The objectives of the reviews will be to identify proposals that meet the criteria of FSRI Student Research Awards RFP 2-2002 and show promise for being published in peer review journals in one’s area of specialty or interest.  Only completed proposals will be reviewed. Following the review of the initial proposals, supplementary materials (e.g., figures) and a meeting are likely to be requested by the FSRI/ACRI reviewers.   These materials and meeting will help provide background to help guide student research toward achieving publication goals and assist in the review process.

Submission:

Submit three hard copies of FSRI Student Research Awards RFP 2-2002 proposals to Rob Turrisi, Department of Psychology, E 615 or a single copy by email to rturrisi@boisestate.edu.  Emailed proposals must be sent as attachments in Word.  There is an open deadline for submissions, however proposals will be funded based on availability of funds.  Once annual funds are awarded, promising proposals will be awarded as funds become available.
